How BodyViz Curriculum Mapping and Implementation Supports Instructors

The BodyViz Curriculum Map

BodyViz understands that instructors balance a lot on top of teaching. Between lesson planning, grading, and supporting students, most of that work happens outside of the classroom. BodyViz brings engaging learning to the classroom, and instead of adding more to an instructor’s day, we aim to reduce class prep time with our custom curriculum mapping process.

After purchasing a BodyViz solution, each customer is paired with a BodyViz Content Curriculum Specialist, who offers step-by-step training sessions to demonstrate exactly what each instructor needs to know to implement BodyViz in their classroom. In preparation for the training session, BodyViz develops a Curriculum Map designed to align our vast library of content directly with the instructor’s course, or courses. We make recommendations for suitable content that matches the instructors course plan. Whether BodyViz is being implemented in a middle school course, or a medical school course, we have content to meet each instructors needs. The assigned specialist continues to provide constant support, even after implementation. BodyViz doesn’t just deliver technology; we partner with instructors every step of the way.

“The curriculum mapping definitely helped with my lessons and geared BodyViz towards my high school level courses. Since I teach five different subjects, prep time on each course can be a lot. BodyViz just added direct links into my lesson plan that was complementary to each topic I wanted to teach each day. They really want to help instructors feel supported. The support is something that a lot of other teachers would benefit from.”

Victor Jenkins, Biomedical Instructor at Knox Central High School

How BodyViz Curriculum Mapping Works

It all starts with instructors providing BodyViz a syllabus, course schedule, lesson plan, or any other material used to help guide their course. The Content Curriculum Specialists then review the coursework, course objectives, and lesson plans to understand how BodyViz can best support instruction. Using the BodyViz Portal, the team searches through our extensive content library of over 1,000 real MRI and CT scans, along with a variety of interactive lessons. They pull this content to build a one-of-a-kind, all-inclusive resource for the instructor that is specific to their course(s). Each Curriculum Map includes direct links, so instructors can access the BodyViz material through a single click.

BodyViz lessons go beyond just virtual dissection. Our lessons include an array of online learning activities, from guided virtual dissections that can be completed in the lab, to homework assignments, quizzes, self-guided study materials, and engaging case study videos called “Brain Builders.” Our team works with instructors to populate each class day on the Curriculum Map with complementary content from BodyViz. Lessons can also be found through a direct link in the Curriculum map, so instructors can easily distribute it to students to complete activities on their own time. Natasha Hunt, a Content Curriculum Specialist with BodyViz shares this about the mapping process:

“We are working to make anatomy education as accessible as possible; students need to be engaged and instructors are busy. We try to offload as much work as we can for instructors and make it easy to get started.”

How to Get Started with Curriculum Mapping

The easiest way for Content Curriculum Specialists to build a map is through studying the instructor's syllabus or course schedule. Schools can be unpredictable, and teachers may need to step into courses on short notice. As former anatomy students themselves, the Content Team understands the challenge of jumping into a course without ready-to-use materials and works to simplify that process.

No syllabus? No problem. The BodyViz team is happy to workshop the course with the instructor regardless of where the curriculum stands, and will continue to be there as the course develops and changes.

Aside from sharing the syllabus or course schedule, providing any additional instructional materials or existing resources can help make a Curriculum Map more specific to the course. “The more information the better, because then we can tailor it directly to what instructors are doing throughout their entire semester,” Hunt shares.

From Setup to Classroom: Implementation & Training

It takes just a few days from the time we receive a course syllabus to make delivery on a Curriculum Map for a course. If an instructor needs multiple maps for several different courses, completion will take longer of course, but we encourage instructors to submit syllabi for any courses where they want to implement BodyViz. During onboarding, the Content Team walks instructors through their map in a live online session. This map is a working document, allowing the Content Team and instructors to collaborate, review content, and make any necessary adjustments.

Aside from presenting the Curriculum Map, the training also includes an introduction into the BodyViz 3D Anatomy Learning Platform. The first training session is dedicated to the BodyViz Portal content and an overview of the BodyViz app. We show the instructors what they need to know about the app and how it can be used with students. Also showcased are the instructor resources, such as where instructors can go to track student progress and grades.

If instructors would like to take it a step further, there is additional training offered to those who want to learn more about the BodyViz app for personal content development and presentations. The main focus of this training is to show all the features of the BodyViz app, learn how to upload your own library of MRI and CT images if you wish, and how to customize and edit BodyViz Files. Need for this training is determined early in the curriculum mapping process.

With how busy instructors can be, and how flexible some lesson plans are, our BodyViz team offers refresher training if needed. We understand that teaching is not black and white; that’s why we provide abbreviated training sessions to onboard new lab assistants and TAs as needed. Gabriella Dhaseleer, a Content Curriculum Specialist on the BodyViz Content Team explains,

“We work with a wide range of classrooms across the country, meeting each instructor and course where they are to identify the best ways BodyViz can enhance their material. We understand that different courses have unique needs, and we actively communicate with our instructors to identify how we can best support them.”

We also make sure to include real examples of how other instructors integrate BodyViz, along with tips and tricks that help make this process seamless. We want instructors to feel supported during every step of implementation. With our curriculum mapping, and implementation and training, instructors are prepared well before implementing BodyViz into the classroom.

Continuous Support Beyond Implementation

BodyViz offers ongoing support to customers before, during, and after implementation. We always want a customer to feel like they can reach out with any questions. If there’s a specific BodyViz issue or challenge, it’s routed to the appropriate team member to resolve the issue. Jenkins shares this about BodyViz support:

“BodyViz offers excellent support. When I reach out, I get a quick response. They really are attentive to answering any questions I may have, and continued to stay in touch after BodyViz was implemented. They offer so much more support than any other software I’ve used.”

After the training is finished and the Curriculum Map is approved by the instructor, the Content Team follows up to ensure the instructor's success in the classroom. If there are changes to a course, and the Curriculum Map needs to be adjusted, we collaborate to find the best solution for the class. BodyViz prioritizes having a long-term partnership with each of our customers. We don’t make delivery and waive goodbye - this isn’t how it should be.

Simplifying Instruction with BodyViz

While the Curriculum Map might seem minor at first glance, it’s an integral part of our offering that helps simplify implementation and reduce any anxiety related to bringing a new resource into the classroom. We understand the amount of time instructors put into their work to ensure their students understand their content. BodyViz values teachers and students' understanding of the material on a different level.

A Curriculum Map tailored specifically to each instructor's course plan is incredibly valuable, but the ongoing support and implementation process is just as important. Instructors are never expected to navigate new material by themselves. The BodyViz Team offers constant support throughout the implementation process, making sure instructors are successful every step of the way.
